This week's haul

This week's box contained...

- 1 cantaloupe
- 6 ears of corn
- 1 green pepper
- red and white new potatoes
- an onion
- wax beans
- 3 tomatoes

Tonight I'll quickly cook the corn and freeze it, and add it to the corn from last week. There's just no way I can eat all of this before it isn't so good to eat - P is away this week, so it's just me and all these veggies...

  1. Do you decide what is going to appear in your box or do they?

It's a little late to say this but if you grill the corn: leave it on the cobs, husk it and lay it directly on the barbecue. It takes virtually no time to be done - it doesn't matter if there are a few caramalized kernels. In fact, that's desirable. Then, when it's done, cut the corn off the cobs and freeze it that way. It's GREAT added to soups, enchilada filling, etc.

  2. It's a surprise what we get every week - it depends on what's growing at the consortium of Mennonite farms represented in the share. I kind of like it that way; it pushes me to be more creative (like with the melon sorbet - now I'm hoping to get another melon, whereas I definitely wouldn't want one if you asked me a week ago.)

If we get more corn, I think grilling is a great idea! There's only so much that will fit in the freezer, so we have to eat some of it now!

  3. And (excuse me if this is too invasive) there are just the two of you? Do you find that there are WAY too many fruits and vegetables each week? (ie: just how many servings of wax beans were there?)

Grilled corn is fabulous, by the way. Of course, it's great with butter, salt and pepper, but it's also really good Indian-style: rubbed with a piece of lime that has been dipped into salt and garam masala. I'm a BIG fan of butter but I don't miss the butter at all with this flavouring.

  4. Actually, the amount isn't too much - we have a half share, so the amount of vegetables is reasonable for what two people should be eating every week. There were about 2 - 3 cups of wax beans, which was enough to make one dish with tomatoes (I'll be posting on that later tonight), with a handful of them leftover to bring for lunch. The stuff lasts a really long time, too - even the tomatoes are still perfectly delicious a week after I pick them up! Other things, like the potatoes, don't have to be eaten the week we get them, either.

The one thing that did completely overwhelm me, though, was the lettuce...I just don't love salads enough to eat a giant (and I mean GIANT) head of lettuce in a week.

The garam masala idea sounds delicious! I might try that with some of the frozen corn if we don't get any new corn this week - sauteed with a bit of lime juice and salt and garam masala sounds tasty.
